On Monday, August 27, several Lado students, a Lado teacher, and a Lado director took a quick bus ride to Bethesda for a fantastic opportunity at DeVry University. DeVry is one of the schools Lado is partnered with. Students who graduate from Lado’s Level 10 class with a score of 85% or higher have the option to attend DeVry without a TOEFL exam requirement!
During the visit, students enjoyed pizza and shared some of their future plans and goals with the DeVry staff. Some came to collect information for their countrymen back home, some came to learn about DeVry’s programs, and all came to enjoy the free learning experience. After pizza, we headed to Public Speaking class with Adjunct Professor, Jen Cadman. Students learned what to say when delivering a speech and how to say it. Professor Cadman broke it down for them, explaining, “You need to say what you’re going to say, then say it, and finally, say what you said.” In a clear, informative, and humorous way, the DeVry professor made a big impact on Lado students, inspiring one student to quote John F. Kennedy! Meanwhile, the Lado teacher admired DeVry’s superior classroom resources and technology, especially the “Idea paint” covering one wall. The special paint allowed the professor to write on the wall with dry erase markers! The Lado teacher was also happy to add some of the concepts presented during the class to her own resources for Lado students.
After the class ended, the Assistant Director of Admissions for DeVry, Phil Smith, came to talk to students about DeVry’s programs and Lado students’ areas of interest. Students learned that DeVry, much like Lado, believes in small class sizes with lots of hands-on projects and group work. Each DeVry student is assigned a financial, career, and academic advisor to help achieve his/her goals and graduate with success. Lado students asked questions about political science and managerial-related programs, document translation, and tuition to name a few topics of interest. They were given contact info to set up a private appointment in the future, and walked away satisfied with an afternoon well-spent. This was the second event of its kind and will certainly not be the last! Keep your eyes and ears open for the next FREE class at DeVry University!
