Top Employers Hire LADO TEFL Grads!

Trainees at LADO’s TEFL Certificate teacher training program have had an outstanding past few weeks!  Some of the best ESOL schools in the United States and around the world have made teaching offers, and in some cases the trainees have created their own opportunities.  Here’s what trainees have done with their LADO TEFL Certificate in the last few weeks alone:

Got a top-paying teaching position in China.  The prestigious Harbin University of Technology and Science was quite impressed with the November TEFL graduate’s knowledge, preparation, and answers during the interview—all learned through the LADO TEFL Program.  She had her LADO teachers look over her contract last week to make sure she got the best deal.  And it was an extremely generous, comprehensive package!

Packed bags for Korea.  Before finishing the LADO TEFL course, two students got jobs in Korea.  One of them is packing her bags right now; she leaves for Korea in just a few weeks!

Signed a contract with a business in Ecuador.  A trainee-- who was once an ESL student at LADO-- is returning to South America.  Before TEFL class ended, he was offered an excellent position as an EFL teacher with a top businessman in Ecuador.

Taught on-site with construction workers.  A well-known DC area bridge engineering firm hired a LADO TEFL graduate to work with several dozen immigrants whom they employ.

Began a tutoring business.  A December grad of LADO TEFL has several clients who come to her home for private ESL lessons.

Started a Peace Corps assignment in Honduras.  A December grad will be spending a year in Honduras for the Peace Corps.  She knew that a major part of her Peace Corps work would be teaching, and now she’s prepared with her LADO TEFL Certificate!

Returned from Patagonia.  The TEFL grad reports that it was “the transformative

experience” of his life!  And LADO’s TEFL Certificate was the stepping stone to his year-long, life-changing experience.

Dr. Robert Lado a pioneer in the field of applied linguistics

Dr. Robert Lado’s legacy continues to be recognized, as indicated by the announcement below from the University of Michigan’s Foreign Language Institute:

Half a Century of Language Testing
--  June 23-25, 2011 (preconference workshops June 21 & 22)

The year 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Robert Lado’s seminal book Language Testing (The Construction and Use of Foreign Language Tests), the first textbook in the field of language assessment. Language Testing was written while Dr. Lado served as director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Robert Lado's pioneering work set the stage for advancements in the fields of language teaching, foreign/second language acquisition, and language assessment. He brought attention to the second language learner and the second language learning process. Dr. Lado employed empirical methods to move beyond descriptions of predictions of learner behavior.

In honor of Dr. Lado's contribution to the field, LTRC 2011 will be devoted to significant developments in language testing in the last fifty years. Presenters are encouraged to focus on areas discussed in Language Testing such as:

  • Language testing and theories of language
  • Testing "language elements" and "integrated language skills"
  • The role of culture and values in language tests
  • Validity in language testing and standards for the critical evaluation of tests
